Nominations sought for African journalism awards

 

African journalists, editors and the general public can nominate candidates for the “CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards.” Application deadline: February 21.

The 2007 annual awards are organized by the Cable News Network (CNN) in association with South African Airlines and in collaboration with the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation.

The awards are comprised of 16 categories including: tourism, arts and culture, economics and business, environment, press freedom, health and HIV/AIDS, print media, photography, sport, television and radio.

A selection of awards are also available to African media professionals whose working language is French or Portuguese.

All category finalists will be invited to a series of workshops and forums in Cape Town in July. Category winners will receive a cash prize, a laptop computer, modem and printer. One overall winner will also have the opportunity to visit CNN’s headquarters in Atlanta, United States.

Pulitzer Center seeks to shed light on under-reported issues

 

English speaking print and broadcast journalists interested in drawing attention to issues of global importance, particularly under-reported issues, can apply for a grant from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting to cover their travel expenses.

The Pulitzer Center, an independent division of the World Security Institute (WSI), was established in 2006. Sponsored by the Pulitzer family, the main goal of the center is to raise the standard of reporting on global affairs.

Grants are usually awarded in the region of US$3,000 but proposals up to a maximum of US$20,000 will be considered.

Interested applicants should prepare a short project proposal in 250 words or less and include a plan for how they intend to distribute the final report within the mainstream media.

Project proposals should be submitted with a budget estimate, a C.V., three professional references and three samples of recent work.

Applications are accepted throughout the year.

Reuters fellowship to study at Oxford University available

Experienced journalists interested in pursuing a specific topic in greater detail can apply for a research fellowship from the Reuters Foundation to attend the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University. Application deadline: January 31.

The main goal of the fellowships is to give journalists the opportunity to pursue a research interest in greater depth than the pressure of their jobs would normally allow.

Fellows will be assigned an academic advisor who specializes in their chosen research field. During their time at the Institute, fellows will be expected to produce a substantial piece of research of publishable quality.

Fellowships last for three, six or nine months and fellows can enter the Institute in October, January or April.

Interested applicants should be mid-career journalists with a minimum of five years experience and have a specific research interest that they would like to pursue.

Applicants should submit a C.V., a short biography of up to 250 words, a reference from your employer, a character reference, a research proposal and several samples of their work.

Priority will be given to applicants whose research proposals match the Institute’s research interests.
