Goal
The primary goal of this project is to contribute to activities geared towards the reduction of corruption in Nigeria. The second component of the project is focused at promoting effective media oversight /monitoring of budget process
Objectives
The project objective is to increase the quality and quantity of fair and balanced news reports in the print media on issues in budgeting and corruption with the greater aim of impacting positively on governance through a more focused monitoring of budgeting, budget implementation and sense of direction in government’s anti-corruption initiatives.
3.3 Expected Results/Outcomes
It is expected at the end of the project that:
- The media will report with better understanding and more critically and regularly issues of budget at all levels of governance i.e. local, state and federal
- Increased volume and accuracy of reports on corruption through structured engagement.
- Capacity of media to follow up on issues in corruption and budgeting as well as budget implementation developed
- Availability of a training and instructional material for training of journalists and students of mass communications on the basics of corruption reporting.
- Skills of media enhanced in budget analysis, monitoring and corruption reporting that its reports would be meaningful and relevant to the reading public.
- Evidence in media reports of competency in budget analysis, monitoring and corruption reporting that it would have impacted on the polity positively.
- More effective media as driver of change through competency in budget analysis, monitoring and corruption reporting in spite of limitations in the provisions of the constitution.
- The CSOs will be able to use the media more as window to get to the public relevant information on budget and issues in corruption.
- Baseline survey report on media coverage of federal and states budget proceses and anti-corruption initiatives.
